Master the Built-in Indicators

The free indicators on TradingView are powerful if you know how to use them. Learn what each one actually tells you and how to apply it to your trading.

How to use these guides: Each indicator works best in context. No single indicator tells the full story — combine trend, momentum and volume tools to build a complete picture before taking a trade. Always confirm with price action.

EMA 21
Trend
EMA — Exponential Moving Average
Reacts faster to recent price than the SMA. Used to identify trend direction and find dynamic support and resistance levels.
MACD Signal
Momentum
MACD — Moving Average Convergence Divergence
Shows the relationship between two EMAs. The histogram reveals momentum strength. Signal line crossovers are key entry and exit triggers.
70 30
Momentum
RSI — Relative Strength Index
Measures speed and change of price movements on a 0–100 scale. Above 70 signals overbought, below 30 signals oversold. Divergences are powerful setups.
Upper Mid Lower
Volatility
Bollinger Bands
Three bands that expand in high volatility and contract in low volatility. Price touching the outer bands signals potential reversals or breakouts.
0% .236 .382 .500 .618 100%
Trend
Fibonacci Retracement
Horizontal levels based on the Fibonacci sequence. Traders use the 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% levels to find where pullbacks are likely to end and trend continues.
VWAP
TrendVolume
VWAP — Volume Weighted Average Price
The average price weighted by volume. Institutions use it as a benchmark. Price above VWAP is bullish, below is bearish. Key intraday reference for NQ and ES.
Volume
Volume
The number of contracts traded in a period. High volume confirms price moves. Low volume signals weak conviction. Never trade a breakout without checking volume.
80 20 %K %D
Momentum
Stochastic RSI
A faster, more sensitive version of RSI. The %K and %D line crossovers in overbought/oversold zones are precise short-term entry signals — especially useful on lower timeframes.
SMA 50
Trend
SMA — Simple Moving Average
The average closing price over a set number of candles. Slower to react than EMA but gives cleaner signals on higher timeframes. The 50 and 200 SMA are key institutional levels.
ATR High volatility
Volatility
ATR — Average True Range
Measures how much an asset moves on average over a period. Essential for position sizing and setting intelligent stop losses that aren’t too tight or too wide.
